The color of my hair has constantly changed since I got it done in February. When most of my blondes start to show, I always try to find a way to touch up my hair so it could look alive again.
I stumbled across this advertisement on Instagram one day. It lured me to purchase the product. It claimed that it’s a hair conditioner that deposits color into your hair. I was definitely intrigued. Seems non-damaging, so why not? The product is called Overtone. I purchased a sample size of the Deep Treatment Pastel Blue for $11 USD. I also added the Rose Gold set to my cart for $52 USD so I could get free shipping.
The little sample size that I used was barely enough for my hair. I didn’t really notice a difference with my hair color after the treatment. Is it possible that I got those results because I chose Pastel Blue instead of Vibrant or Extreme Blue?
I was actually not too happy with the results. The scent of the product is extremely strong as well. The minty scent was overpowering and made me feel nauseous after applying it and leaving it on my hair for about 15 minutes. Overtone is pricey for the amount of product you get. Sadly, I would not purchase this again.
After my experience with Overtone, I decided to replicate the concept with Arctic Fox Semi-Permanent Hair Dye and Joico Color Endure Conditioner. For the Arctic Fox Hair Dye, I purchased the colors Purple Rain and Poseidon from Amazon. It was $10.99 USD each. As for the Joico Color Endure Conditioner, I purchased it for $32.99 USD from Ulta during their BOGO sale. They always have the deal where you can Buy 2 and Get 1 Free.
I heard it’s best to find a conditioner that is Sulfate-Free. Conditioners with sulfate may cause your application to become patchy when applied to the hair.
I wanted to give purple hair a try for the first time so I only put 4-5 small drops of the hair dye and mostly conditioner. I left the pastel mixture on my hair for 45 minutes before I washed it off with cold water.
My hair had a light hints of purple.
I also had random pink and silver tones in my hair as well. Seems like I have unicorn hair.
I wanted to do this hair mask as a weekly hair treatment to see if my hair will have more purple tints over time. Unfortunately, the purple fades after a week. Keep in mind that I only wash my hair about twice a week. It’s been trained to do so.
For three weeks, I did the same exact treatment (same amount of conditioner and same amount of hair dye). By the end of every week, the purple color completely washed out. I assume the color faded quickly because I used minimal amounts of hair dye.
I decided to put more hair dye this time around. I used 1/3 hair dye and 2/3 conditioner. I was afraid to do so before because of the possibility for my hair to become too vibrant for my liking. This mixture is definitely more vibrant than the mixture from above.
I left the dye on my hair for 45 minutes before I washed it out with cold water.
I’m super happy with the results. Love the hair dye and conditioner mixture.
This is my current hair state after about two weeks. No touch up.
You can see the color of my hair is fading. Some parts of my hair are turning pink which I think is actually pretty neat.
There are so many benefits to doing touch ups at home.
- It’s really affordable. You can play with different colors without hurting your wallet.
- Flexible schedule. Treatment can be done whenever you feel like doing it.
- The treatment only takes about 20 minutes to apply and additional 45 minutes to leave on. At the salons, they will probably keep you there for 4+ hours.
- Conditioner acts as a treatment for your hair.
- You can buy one bottle of hair dye but have so many variances of the shade depending on how much conditioner you add to your mixture. Really customizable.
To be honest, I’m really happy with the Arctic Fox Hair Dye. Makes me want to purchase one of each shade just to play around with the colors. One bottle can be used over 10 times when mixed with conditioner!
I hope you found this post helpful. This is something that I found to be extremely budget friendly. Until next time!
P.S. Keep in mind that this hair dye treatment will only work for previously bleached or naturally lightened hair. It will not work on dark hair colors. I’m also no professional. I just like sharing my experience with products that I really enjoy trying out.
